Christmas Home Decor - Have Yourself a Colourful Little Christmas

Christmas home decor grape light and honeycomb decorationsSome of us opt to live with colour in our homes all year round. Others wait until Christmas to crank up the colour. If you are a maximalist when it comes to Christmas home decor, colourful decorations that stand out from the crowd will be sure to get your heart aflutter. Even if your palette is usually more restrained, Christmas is the time to let your hair down.

Whether you’re expecting a full house over Christmas or planning a quiet one, injecting some colour into the proceedings can only be a good thing. Adding a splash of colour to your home helps everyone get into the festive spirit.

When it comes to Christmas home decor there are a few key areas to think about.

Christmas Tree

Plenty of decisions to be made here. You can opt for real – but with roots or without? A small tabletop affair so the baby or dog can’t eat the decorations? Or one that fills the entire room? How about a faux pine Christmas tree? Or tinsel - gold, silver or white? No pink? Different styles in different rooms perhaps?

For the past couple of years we have gone for a small rooted pine tree. I am a complete nightmare choosing ‘the one’ – trying to find perfect branch placement. I think I may have some sort of Christmas tree OCD.

Last year Isadora, then aged 2, 'assisted' with decorating the tree. One side was smothered with every possible style of decoration under the sun. The other side remained pretty much bare. Somehow, I managed to resist too much rearrangement until she’d gone to bed!

Dominic’s mum used to prune her faux pine tree every year, until, after a couple of decades, it was nothing more than a stick with a few stumps sticking out. This wasn't a great look, but on the plus side meant it took up less and less space. Eventually, it looked as though it had suffered a nervous breakdown and, I'm sorry to say, is no more - otherwise a photo would have been included in this post.

How about a tree of life?

If you are short of space and fancy a change from pine needles embedded in your feet, how about a Mexican Tree of Life? A real showstopper, this alternative Christmas tree looks fabulous on a mantelpiece, sideboard or table. It works with dark walls or paler colour schemes.

Christmas Lighting

Fairy lights are one of my favourite things about Christmas and these days there are plenty to choose from. Candles are also a must, ideally scented ones. But how about something a little different for added wow factor?

This stunning coloured grape light takes pride of place in our snug living room at Christmas, giving off the most mesmerising glow. Jewel coloured shades of indigo, violet, cerise, orange, yellow and green reflect off nearby walls and surfaces. It’s guaranteed to attract gasps of delight. This funky light isn’t just for Christmas though; it will have your pulse racing at any time of year. We move ours to a dark part of our hallway after Christmas and it cheers us on through the winter months.

Christmas Decorations

If you’re anything like us you will have gathered a fair few decorations over the years. We tend to buy a couple of new ones each year and now have quite a stash. Some have stayed firm favourites and come out each year. Others have been retired to the bottom of the box and wait to come back into favour.

We're absolutely delighted that many of our colourful bird and butterfly decorations featured in this year's fabulous Christmas issue of Living Etc. Take a look at the 'Step into Christmas' feature, beautifully styled by Marianne Cotterill. It's jam packed full of vibrant colour and glitz.
