• Quirky Home Decor Inspired by Birds

quirky home decor cranesAnyone browsing through our collection of eclectic home accessories can tell that at Pompom and Twiddle we are quite partial to quirky home decor. You may also have noticed that we have a bit of a penchant for birds. No, we aren’t out there with our binoculars at weekends, but do appreciate the beauty of our feathered friends, including when it comes to home decor.

  • Botanical Inspiration - Exploring Great Dixter Gardens

Botanical inspiration Great Dixter dahliasSources of inspiration for our quirky homeware store are rich and varied, but gardens are pretty high up there. One of our favourite local gardens for botanical inspiration is Great Dixter, just up the road in Northiam, East Sussex. You would be hard pushed to do a cartwheel in our tiny courtyard, so we love to visit 'proper' gardens from time to time. Wandering around a garden oasis for a couple of hours makes us ridiculously happy and provides inspiration galore!

  • Little Girl's Bedroom Shelf Given a Tickle of Pink

Girl's room pink shelfAs I brushed the dust off my treasure in the corner of a junk shop it was love at first sight. The abandoned mid century shelf was perfect for our soon to arrive baby’s room. I pictured it painted grey with a dinosaur and pirate hanging out on its shelves. So, no one was more surprised than me when the box room on our top floor became a girl's bedroom and the shelf ended up pink.

  • Indian Salad and a Funky Tablecloth

Indian salad on bright funky tableclothAfter waking up to grey skies once again, we decided there was nothing for it but to brighten up our day by preparing a colourful feast. As much as we love a touch of grey for interiors, it’s all getting rather samey when it comes to the dreary British summer. We had a ‘glut’ of mint in the garden this year, so thought we would weave a few sprigs into our plans. We finally decided upon an Indian salad based upon Kachumber to accompany a homemade aubergine and coconut curry. We laid the table with a bright, funky tablecloth and transported ourselves away to somewhere balmy and exotic.

  • Enjoy Heavenly Butterfly Wall Decor

Butterfly decor hanging butterflies from Pompom and TwiddleWhen I was small I witnessed the magical moment a butterfly emerged from its chrysalis and promptly fell in love. For a while, the other half of Pompom and Twiddle aspired to be an actual butterfly when he grew up. So, it’s unsurprising that butterflies still make our hearts soar. Some believe a butterfly landing on you is good luck. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if butterfly wall decor could bring a little good fortune into your home?

  • QUIRKY INTERIORS INSPIRED BY BEAUTIFUL BEETLES

Quirky interiors framed beetlesAll sorts of sights can trigger wonderment – a baby being born, a bluebell wood bathed in sunlight, a breathtaking sunset. I love all of these, but in my case watching a shiny beetle or insect going about its day is another awe inspiring marvel. Some of my earliest memories are crouching down in fascination to watch bees collecting pollen or ants trooping across the patio. Insects are riveting and beautiful, more so when you look closely. These days we're always on the look out for quirky interiors that have been inspired by insects.

  • Delighting in Seaside Gardens

Seaside gardens Derek Jarman's Cottage DungenessWhen we planned our move from London to Hastings many moons ago, seeking out a home with a garden was way up there on our list of priorities. In London, our only outside space was the local pub’s beer garden. We now felt ready for a few flowerbeds of our own - although not quite grown up enough for a lawnmower. With visions of wonderful seaside gardens dancing in our heads we set about our search.

  • Quirky Wedding Gifts for Love Birds

Quirky wedding gifts our big dayThe wedding season is upon us and a small part of me can’t help but wish I had one to plan. Even though I had the best wedding ever, I often fancy doing it all over again (luckily still with Dominic).  Nowadays I have to be content with attending weddings as a guest. We only have one big day in our social calendar this year, but it’s got me thinking about wedding gifts. When it comes to presents for our friends, we like to plump for unusual or quirky wedding gifts that will stand out from the crowd.

  • Asparagus Recipe with Almond and Sherry Vinegar Dip

Asparagus recipe cabbage leaf bowlCooking and sharing food is a huge part of what makes a house a home. Dominic and I have always enjoyed cooking together and over the years have collected a fair few crowd-pleasing vegetarian recipes up our sleeves. We thought we’d share some of our most delicious recipes on the blog from time to time. May and June is short but sweet asparagus season, so an asparagus recipe is just the ticket for our first recipe post.

  • Eclectic Floral Decor - Rooms that Bloom

Floral decor moodboardFlowers surrounded me as I grew up. My mother and grandparents were florists and I spent my early years frolicking around vases of roses, chrysanthemums, carnations and iris – all very much in vogue at the time. When I walk into a flower shop today, it transports me straight back to my childhood. The scent of foliage and floral fragrances mingled into an unforgettable perfume. With the gates opening to the Chelsea Flower Show this week, I thought we should spend some time delighting in the eclectic world of floral decor.
